Cleveland Pride drops road
game to CNY United.
The Cleveland Pride lost their
fourth straight game, Saturday night in Syracuse, New
York. The Pride lost 16-2 to CNY United at Central New
York State Soccer Facility. CNY improved their undefeated
campaign, improving to 6-0-0. They remain atop the New
England Division standings. The Pride drops to 0-4-0.
CNY came out strong in the first
quarter, opening the scoring on a Rick Anthony free kick,
driven low and hard to beat goalkeeper, Joe Emery (Lakewood).
United doubled their advantage minutes later when PASL
All-Star Freddie Chambers calmly placed the ball into
the top corner, finishing a cross from Samir Malovic.
In the second quarter, Malovic
added another goal when he beat his defender one on
one and dispatched a low shot past the keeper. Brad
Vinciguerra sent United into the half up 8-0 as he tallied
his first goal of the season; fighting through a tackle
and placing a left footed shot into the lower corner.
In the third quarter, United added to
their advantage over the Pride, Dan Stevens set up Anthony
Andrews with a back heel pass across the box to make
it 10-0, and then Stevens again found Andrews at the
far post to make it 12-0.
In the fourth quarter Stevens rounded
out his night with a great finish off the inside of
the post to make it 14-0. Cleveland finally pulled one
back to make it 14-2 at the 6:00 minute mark. Captain
Ed Holmes (Columbia Station/Baldwin-Wallace) played
a one-time pass to captain Ben Dotson (Brunswick/Baldwin-Wallace)
who swerved a 22-yard bender into the top far post leaving
goalkeeper Brian O’Quinn helpless. Samir Malovic
then completed the scoring with a simple tap in past
backup goalkeeper Randy Buchanan (Parma), after Chambers
slid a ball across the box.
In between the pipes, Emery made 18
saves. For CNY United, Darren Wynne made 10 saves and
Brian O’Quinn made six saves in relief.
The Cleveland Pride is next in action,
Saturday, February 2nd, when they host division-rival,
FC Indiana, for a Great Lakes Division match. Kickoff
is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
